CURATOR’s TALK
Nicole Lai

Nicole Lai, Curator and founder of Art Square Taiwan in Tainan, Taiwan, will present her past and current exhibition projects in Taiwan and elsewhere, and talk about the relation of Asian and European contemporary art. She received the grant St.A.i.R. Styria Artist in Residence for Graz from September to November 2017.

Yi-Hsin Nicole Lai received the doctorate degree in Visual Culture from the University of Westminster in 2011. After returning to Taiwan, she founded ART SQUARE TAIWAN as a space to present art and culture through professional curatorial practices. Since 2012, artists are invited to participate in a residency program under the themes city and memory: artistic research on local history / memory / context and on the texture of urban space. Aim is also to actively gather the local community to engage with the creation process.

Her curatorial research focuses in postcolonial urban space, and reflection of self and the other. Her exhibitions are curated around city patterns and movements, their cultural meanings, and memories of the residents, e.g.: The Bared Sound. A Symphony of Artists from Taiwan and Mississippi (2017), Shattered Sanctity (2017), Lost in the Mobius – Taiwan, Macau (2014–2016), There Has Been (2014).
